“We didn’t know we could decide so much ourselves”
Separation and divorce are among the most stressful experiences that anybody can go through. Couples need to sort out a great many complex and emotionally-charged issues at a time when there may be a lot of anger and distress between them. Mediation gives you control of the situation. Mediators help bring fairness and dignity to a fraught situation, so that couples can sort out the best decision for themselves and for their families.
Family mediation:
- helps reduce hostility and improves the chances of long-term co-operation
- concentrates on resolving shared problems rather than emphasizing entrenched and polarized positions through litigation
- focuses on the interests of children, helping you to recognise and meet their needs as parents even when you are no longer a couple
- provides an opportunity to assess whether there is any possibility of a co-operative outcome to your dispute
- Those who are helped to reach agreements through mediation tend to incur lower legal costs
- You control the pace and content of mediation rather than lawyers, legislation or the court
- You can improve communication and look to the future, not the past
- Communication takes place face to face or in separate rooms, rather than through solicitors’ letters or across a courtroom, thus reducing delay and the risk of misunderstanding or escalation
